Philip Pogson joined The Leading Partnership at the beginning of 2000. Originally trained in Australia and The Netherlands as a classical musician, Philip has held management positions in the not-for-profit, higher education and private sectors.  He has also founded several successful businesses. Philip’s strengths lie in the fields of strategy (and implementation), business and operational planning, leadership and organisational development.  He has special interests in industry sectors such as general insurance and reinsurance run-off, medical and rural R&D, post graduate medical education, superannuation, higher education and, more recently, retail.

As an experienced creative business person, an internationally published author, and a strategic consultant with a broad range of management and consulting experience across the not-for-profit, commercial, higher education and health sectors, he brings a unique set of skills and a special flexibility and subtlety to his assignments.  Philip has a proven capacity to work across complex commercial areas such as reinsurance, asset management, direct and reinsurance run-off, lender mortgage insurance, industrials and professional services.  His clients, most of whom are at CEO, MD or Executive General Manager level, include IAG Asset Management and IAG Reinsurance, University of NSW, Cobalt Run-off Services, AMP, Genworth Lender Mortgage Insurance, GHD Engineering (Sydney), ANASTO, Murdoch Books, Good Health Solutions, Supre, Unistraw, Downer Engineering, Provet, Garvan Institute, REST Superannuation & Q-Super.  Other Leading Partnership clients include Alphawest (ICT), Siemens, Alstom, Qantas Super Fund, BHP Billiton and AMP Private Capital (Australia & NZ).

In the field of general corporate governance The Leading Partnership has provided strategy and governance advice to a number of Boards that include Retail Employees Superannuation Trust (REST), Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA), Q Super, Retail Cube, Kindergarten Union, Qantas Superannuation (QSL), The Australasian Veterinary Boards Council (AVBC) and the Association of Superannuation Funds of Australia (ASFA).  The Leading Partnership has also worked with the Ministerial Councils of the NSW Post Graduate Medical Council (PMC), the NSW Medical Education and Training Council (MTEC) and the NSW Institute of Medical Education and Training (IMET).  Philip has founded and overseen several successful leadership development programs.

Philip is a graduate and first prize-winner of the NSW Conservatorium of Music and holds a M.Ed. (by thesis) from the University of Technology Sydney. As well as being a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors (FAICD), Philip holds a Post Graduate Diploma in Applied Corporate Governance through Chartered Secretaries Australia, the peak body for Company Secretaries.  He is the author of several peer reviewed articles and book chapters as well as being co-author of an internationally published book on the relationship between adult learning and adult developmental psychology - “Learning and Change in the Adult Years” - which has been in continuous publication in the US for more than a decade.  While working his way through school and University, Philip was variously employed as a contract hay carter, relief dairy hand, house painter and while studying in Holland, as a gardener and contract cleaner; all of which enhanced his life experience!

Philip’s pro bono portfolio includes strategic advice to the Veterinary Science Foundation at the University of Sydney, coaching support for not-for-profit leaders, planning assistance for the Australian Sleep Association, Animal Management in Rural and Remote Indigenous Communities (AMRRIC), Pacific Opera and several other organisations. He is currently assisting The University of NSW with the implementation of its Indigenous Strategy.   He is also an arts entrepreneur, music producer and acts as the Development Manager for “The Marais Project”, a professional chamber music ensemble he runs jointly with his wife Jennifer, a freelance viola da gambist (similar to the cello).  Together they present one of Australia’s few professional concert series for the viola da gamba.  In late 2007 they co-produced The Marais Project’s first CD, “Viol Dreaming”.  On the weekends Philip is a passionate amateur bass guitarist.  He enjoys reading, bike riding in Bicentennial Park, concert going and writing the occasional short story or article.
